Tapanui Primary School playground is getting a makeover. Thanks to the generosity of the community, dedicated mahi of volunteers, and a $7,000 grant from Clutha Foundation, Tapanui Primary has transformed its ageing playground into a safe, modern play space.
The previous wooden fort had stood for over 40 years and was in place when the current Principal’s husband was a student. It has been replaced with a modern tower featuring a rock-climbing wall and spiral slide. Additionally, existing equipment has been refurbished to ensure it continues to serve the students and community for the next generation. The equipment has been installed, and the playground is now awaiting landscaping. Tapanui School PTA hope the playground will be open by the end of May 2025.
The Tapanui Primary playground isn't just a fun place for students to relax in between lessons, it's where children develop skills necessary to become well-rounded adults. The revitalised playground promotes the health and development of local children through play. Research shows that play can reduce stress, build resilience, boost creativity, and foster critical thinking skills. Social play also helps tamariki develop emotional intelligence, a crucial skill for future personal and professional success.
The playground project is a testament to what communities can achieve when they come together with a shared vision. Tapanui Primary PTA Treasurer Joy Campbell proudly says “All community businesses, whether small, large, or self-employed have come together to make this happen. Everyone has been incredibly generous. Thank you to the Tapanui Community!”
Vanessa Stewart, Chair of Tapanui Primary PTA shares that anticipation is mounting among students as the build nears completion. “They just can’t wait! There is a huge excitement.” The adults are thrilled too, “Just knowing this new bit is up to code and safer for our kids is a relief.”
