Tokomairiro Community Hub plays an important role in improving the health and wellbeing of Milton residents. It offers a wide range of services, including food and clothing shares, workshops, and referrals to social services.
Access to essential social services is crucial for rural communities like Milton.
The Hub's location in a prominent building on Milton’s main street makes it easily accessible. The space is comfortable, naturally encouraging people to connect with one another. Hub coordinator Joeline Ratana greets visitors warmly, often by name, reflecting the close-knit nature of the community.
Joeline explains that while the Hub isn’t a foodbank, it partners with KiwiHarvest, Bowling Club, Community Foodbank, and generous locals to provide free and affordable kai. A recent grant from Clutha Foundation enabled the Hub to purchase an upright freezer. This freezer compliments its food services, along with the Food Sharing Pantry, located in the car park.
Joeline expressed gratitude for the funding, “I’m just so happy and grateful whenever we do receive funding. It’s a win.”
“It's going to be huge” she says. “Because we have a relationship now with Bowling Club, we're getting a crate that can go into that freezer. That’s going to help a lot more people.”
Tokomairiro Community Hub is committed to improving community outcomes through partnerships. By working with organisations, agencies, and individuals, the Hub ensures a diverse range of support services reach people who need them most. Helping residents know how to get a hand up when needed and creating a space where the community can help one other.
With more than 3,000 pop-in visits each year, the Hub’s open-door policy welcomes everyone whether they visit for appointments, emergency clothing, or simply a cup of tea. It’s a place of connection, care, and lasting impact in Tokomairiro.
